Putonghua, another name of modern standard Chinese, takes Beijing pronunciation as the standard sound, northern Mandarin as the basic dialect, and modern vernacular writings as the common language of grammatical norms. Putonghua is one of the variants of modern standard Chinese and the legal national common language of the People's Republic of China. The word "common" in "Putonghua" refers to the meaning of "universal" and "common". Chinese is not equivalent to Putonghua.

The main source of modern Putonghua is the Central Plains Phonology compiled on the basis of Dadu (Beijing) dialect during the Yuan Dynasty.
